FRED THE MAN,THE FINE ARTIST AND THE ILLUSTRATOR

By: Hollis McCray-Clark

Fred was a very good friend of mine for many years. I met him through my sister, originally. We had friendships that lasted from New York City to Los Angeles, California for many years.

Fred's artwork is so great that I was shocked when I initially saw his artwork in his studio in New York City.

Fred was usually a good spirited person (but not always), relatively low key, funny with an infectious fantastic laugh!  Not too loud. It was just a laugh with such joy that it became infectious. When Fred laughed ( I can just see him now) you also had to laugh. Everyone had to laugh with him.

Fred took his craft very seriously, however. From art school to his life as a professional artist and illustrator his work was pure artistic genius. His artistic genius, articulation and detail was mind bogglingly, realistic, accurate, and just plain beautiful !

Fred was capable of making you feel his artwork, as well as, creating great artistic beauty. That is the sign of his total mastery of his craft.

Fred was born to become the great artist he became. We are lucky to have his legacy of hard work and genius to remember him by.

I personally thank the creators of The Pfeiffer Pfiles Blog (Courtney Rogers and Scotty Phillips) for depicting almost a lifetime of Fred's artwork.

Fred would be very proud of these two men who have captured the true heart of his works of art.

The site depicts many of the illustrations for book covers Fred created during his lifetime.

Fred's spirit is here! He is aware that his works of art are greatly appreciated. I thank Fred for sharing the magic of his genius.

 THE YOUNG FRED PFEIFFER

Young Fred came from Kansas and travelled to Art School in California, professional work in New York City and Los Angeles, California in pursuit of his dreams to become the best of the best. Fred succeeded in his dreams to become the most talented artist of superb artistic genius.

Below I have shared information from Fred's sister Linda Pfeiffer Hill sent to Courtney Rogers in a letter in February, 2008. She was aware of his pursuit of information about Fred for either a book or a blog.  We thank Linda for sharing information about her wonderful brother Carl Frederick Pfeiffer, Jr. See quotes below:

"Fred was born July 14,1940 and passed away on January 4, 1996.  He graduated from the Art Center in Los Angeles, California, as an illustrator.  He worked in New York City and Los Angeles. He had artwork displayed in the Society of Illustrators exhibits and received awards for same."

"He did a portrait of Harrison Ford for the "Indiana Jones" movie and it was terrific (I have the original). The portrait was used in the advertising for the movie."

"He also did the portrait of Louis L'Amour for the Louis L'Amour 1983 Western Calendar. Again, this is quite a portrait."

"Later in his life, he had a little time to do some fine art.  I have some of the original oil paintings he did."
